Building in Ghana is governed by national legislation, a technical building code and local planning rules. Architects work within all three. This page explains what each one covers so clients, students and practitioners know where to look; the Architectural Society of Ghana also publishes the source documents on its resources page.
The Architects Act
Establishes architecture as a regulated profession in Ghana, sets out who may practise and use the title of architect, and provides the framework for registration and professional discipline.
National Building Code (LI 2460)
Ghana's consolidated building regulations, covering structure, fire safety, ventilation, sanitation, accessibility and energy performance. It is the technical benchmark every permit drawing is measured against.
Planning and permitting
Development permits are issued by the relevant Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly. Applications rely on drawings prepared by qualified professionals and must match the zoning scheme for the area.
The ASG Constitution and bye laws
Govern membership categories, elections, committees and the professional conduct expected of members of the Architectural Society of Ghana.
Professional conduct and CPD
Members are expected to keep their knowledge current and to act in the interest of clients and the public. Continuing professional development is logged annually.
