How to become an architect in Ghana
From your first year of study to chartered practice — the qualifications, experience and examinations that make you an architect, and where the Architectural Society of Ghana fits in.
Architecture in Ghana is a regulated profession. Designing buildings for the public carries responsibility for safety, cost and the character of our towns and cities, so the route into practice combines accredited education, supervised experience and a formal assessment of competence. The Architectural Society of Ghana (ASG) is the national professional body that supports architects through that journey and throughout their careers.
The five stages
- 01
Earn an accredited architecture degree
Study for a Bachelor of Science in Architecture followed by a Master of Architecture (or equivalent) at an accredited Ghanaian school such as KNUST, or at a recognised institution abroad. Together these usually take five to six years.
- 02
Complete supervised professional experience
Work in practice under the supervision of a registered architect, keeping a record of the projects and responsibilities you handle. This period builds the practical judgement that examinations cannot teach.

Sit the professional examination
Demonstrate competence in design, contract administration, building regulations and professional ethics through the qualifying assessment.

Register and join the profession
Register to practise as an architect in Ghana and take up Chartered membership of the Architectural Society of Ghana, which connects you to peers, CPD and the Society's advocacy work.

Keep learning every year
Maintain your standing through continuing professional development — courses, seminars and site-based learning logged each year.
Common questions
- How long does it take to become an architect in Ghana?
- Most architects qualify in eight to ten years: five to six years of accredited study, at least two years of supervised practice, and the professional examination.
- Can students join the Architectural Society of Ghana?
- Yes. Student membership is open to anyone enrolled on an accredited architecture programme, and Technical and Associate categories cover graduates and allied professionals who are not yet chartered.
- Do I need a degree from Ghana?
- No. Qualifications from recognised institutions outside Ghana are considered, though you will still need supervised local experience and the professional examination.
